Historic Hideaways

We are so lucky in Britain to have a variety of historic places – from castles to archaeological sites and stately homes – right on our doorstep! So, in this blog, we will be delving into some of the best historical days out near our parks. With activities for the kids, scenic walks and breathtaking buildings, there is something for everyone.

West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village

Situated just a 10-minute drive from Aspen Country Park is an award-winning area of history to explore. West Stow is history brought to life, with a full Anglo-Saxon village, talks with archaeologists and 125 acres of unspoilt countryside. Once the site of a real village back in AD 420, the site has been rebuilt to its former glory with a farmer’s home, workshop and weaving house among others. Once you’re done uncovering history, you can explore the surrounding grounds for a full family day out.

The Vyne

Once a Tudor powerhouse, this 17th-century estate is a nationally recognised ‘treasure house’ just 40 minutes drive from Cherry Bird Country Park. The estate boasts gardens, woodlands and wetlands, but you can also explore indoors. Complete with luxurious oak galleries and tapestries, lit by the winter sun through stained glass windows, it’s a historic gem. The house is also home to an amazing collection of books in its library. So, for literary fans, outdoor explorers and history nerds it is truly a must-see.

Tintagel Old Post Office

Last used as a sorting office in Victorian times, this mediaeval farmhouse is a time capsule of centuries gone by. From its charming architecture – especially its ‘wonky roof’ – to its historic fixtures, it’s a perfect day out from Willow Bay Country Park. You can also bring home a part of Tintagel to your lodge with seasonal plants and second-hand books on sale. Outside, the cottage garden is the perfect place to take in the views and watch the wildlife.

Killerton Estate

Just half an hour from Hornbeam Country Park in Devon is the stunning Killerton Estate. With a historic watermill, chapel and gardens onsite, you might struggle to explore it all in one day! The house is also home to the historic fashion collection, over 20,000 items of clothing and accessories from throughout history. Outdoors, the estate’s parkland has its own Iron Age fort and bear’s hut!
